A Tibetan flag in front of CKS memorial.

Both the Tibetan and Hong Kong diaspora were very present at the memorial event – both for obvious reasons. The symbols of their fight for liberty were hard to miss: Tibetan flags, an image of the Dalai Lama, a replica of the Pillar of Shame from Victoria Park, even the independence flag of Hong Kong protesters.

Every single one of these items can get you in great trouble in Tibet or Hong Kong, and while it was easy to feel happy that the police here was only there to make sure no-one would get into trouble for having these items, it was also not hard to feel the certain amount of courage it took for people to associate with these symbols.
