Donggang, Carrying gods
In the last night of the Donggang Welcomes the Kings Peace Ceremony 東港迎王平安祭典, small groups of man carry their heavy palanquins through the streets towards the beach. The night is filled with excitement and smoke from firecrackers, as many have probably worked hours and days to prepare for this event. While I have experienced nothing alike this night in Europe, it nonetheless reminded me of the Semana Santa in Spain or the carnival in Cologne.
Close to the beach, Zhenhai Temple 東港鎮海宮 grants a surprising break from the hustle and bustle in the streets – and impressive carved woodwork.
